For more than 10 years I have offered support, compassion, and advocacy in the U.S. and internationally. I built a nonprofit to serve resettled refugees in Phoenix, AZ, and worked and studied as a Fulbright Scholar in Cairo, Egypt. I also managed a Rape Crisis Center program for 4.5 years. To serve others with care and compassion in a sustainable way, I believe one needs to direct compassion inward, as well. During these challenging and rewarding years, yoga was my primary tool for experiencing self-care and compassion. My dedication to yoga as a means of healing led me to obtain my 200-hour Yoga Teacher Certification in 2011 from Akasha Yoga under the guidance of Stephanie Pafford and Alison Scola. I continued my training in Prenatal Yoga with Flossie Park at The Soul of Yoga in early 2015.
In 2012 my husband and I underwent the transformative experience of pregnancy and childbirth and became parents to an amazing new person. Becoming a mother the first time taught me how yoga and the breath can be used prenatally, in labor, and postpartum to support an empowered mother. Becoming a mother and giving birth to a second baby in December 2015 has provided an opportunity to grow even more as a Mother, Doula, Teacher and Mentor.
In order to support other families through their own birth journeys I completed birth doula training and certification through The Organization of Labor Assistants for Birth Options and Resources in 2014. Since obtaining my certification, I have attended many additional trainings including a workshop with Gail Tully on Spinning Babies: Easier Birth with Fetal Positioning, and a three-day Birthing From Within Introductory training with Virginia Bobro. I am a Birthing From Within Mentor and am offering upcoming Birthing From Within childbirth preparation series’. As a birth doula I support mothers and partners in honoring their inherent power and wisdom to choose what is best for them and for their baby.
My yoga teaching is informed by nearly 15 years of exploring yoga in my own mind and body. I share yoga through teaching in a way that is lighthearted, welcoming, accessible, and safe, using props and modifications where appropriate. I enjoy teaching Trauma-informed yoga, Prenatal yoga, Postpartum yoga, or a blend of all of the above. I incorporate alignment suggestions based on individual student anatomy to facilitate a safe, sustainable, and lifelong yoga practice.
This is my family. They inspire me every day to do better, be better, and cultivate more compassion in our world.
Whether I’m teaching yoga classes, private yoga sessions, mentoring a Birthing From Within Childbirth Preparation Class or supporting a birthing family as a birth doula, I strive to teach and serve in a way that encourages reflection, empowerment, and compassion for the self and for others.
